Cougar Miller, 18 years old from a small town in Central Kansas. Diagnosed with brain cancer on May 28th. Two weeks after his high school graduation, Cougar started experiencing severe, debilitating headaches. After 3 days of extreme pain, his mom took him to a walk-in clinic inside the Abilene hospital. They were told Cougar had a severe sinus infection but her mothers intuition knew it was something more. They moved him to the emergency room and by that point, the head pain had become more severe and more frequent. Cougars arms and legs were stiffening and after 2 rounds of morphine, the pain had not subsided. The doctor agreed to order a ct scan and some basic labs where they discovered a plum-sized tumor on his brain along with an excessive amount of fluid.
Within 1 hour, Cougar was life-flighted to Children's Mercy in Kansas City. Cougar had emergency surgery to relieve the fluid on his brain followed by a biopsy and permanent shunt. The biopsy revealed a malignant tumor in the center of his brain. Cougar spent 12 days at Children's Mercy. During this time, Cougar developed an abscessed tooth and had to have an extraction from his hospital bed.
Cougar is the oldest of 4 and the son of an Army Veteran and family business owners of a custom upholstery company. Raised on 10 acres in the country, Cougar found the hardest part of his 12 days at CM was being stuck indoors. He’d walk the halls pulling his IV cart just to get outside where he loved to be!
On August 28th, Cougar started his 1st of 30 proton radiation treatments at KU cancer center. His treatments only last about 30 minutes a day so in their free time, they spend time at the gym, exploring Kansas City and making desserts to share with the other guests of the Ronald McDonald House.
Cougar had plans to start an apprenticeship to be an electrician with Mueller Electric out of Manhattan, Kansas but those plans have been put on hold.
Let’s help Cougar and his family hopefully lighten some of the financial load they’ll be facing. Please share Cougar’s story and let’s reach or possibly exceed our goal!
