Where Is My Mother?

On Monday, July 8, 2024, a gruesome and senseless tragedy struck the community of Fort. Lauderdale, Florida. Tiarra Holliday, 28 years old, a devoted mother, and her precious 2 year old son, DeAgoo Henry, of Broward County, were catastrophically impacted.
From the moment of conception, DeAgoo meaning (Divine Heir), nicknamed “Dax,” was considered a blessing by his mother, Tiarra, who showered him with love, advocated for his safety, and ensured his connection with God and family. She took Dax with her wherever she went, which was the occasion on July 8th when the tragedy occurred.

In the 700 block of Northwest 10th Terrace, in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, surveillance footage shows a silver car speeding around a corner and opening fire on a small group of people sitting under palm trees. Within seconds, five people, including Tiarra and DeAgoo Henry, were caught in the crossfire of a drive-by wherein Tiarra Holliday’s wound was fatal. One of the witnesses heard Tiarra scream, “Someone save my baby, get my baby” as her body gets hit by a lethal shot. Tiarra’s body would fall to the ground inside the convenience store and her son Dax’s body would lay in the street of 10th Terrace.

Tiarra was pronounced dead at the scene, while DeAgoo was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Grazed in the head, DeAgoo suffered a fractured skull and was placed in a medically induced coma. A close relative reports, “The doctor told me, the bone was floating in his head and due to his young age, it would reattach itself, which would not require an additional surgery.” However, surgeons performed two operations, one to alleviate brain swelling that could’ve crushed his spine and caused him to be paralyzed, and extraction of bullets from his leg, which required the insertion of a metal plate to stabilise the bone and a rod in his thigh.

In keeping with the legacy of his family, the Henrys of Broward’s Westside Gazette, DeAgoo’s strength is an inspiration to all of us. His father and his maternal grandparents are by his side every step of the way. as surgeons prepare to address the rod used for his broken thigh bone, in approximately 6 months.

Though only two years old, DeAgoo enjoyed soccer, dance, and even chose his favorite basketball players. Not all of his injuries are visible, and the void created by the death of his mom, Tiarra Holliday, will affect him for a lifetime. Dax will ask, “Where is my mother?”

Dr. Philip J. Lazarus, an expert in school psychology and a professor at Florida International University, has spent decades studying school shootings and comforting the children who have lived through them. He suggests that the psychological repercussions from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress such as; issues concentrating, trouble sleeping, developing a fear of loud noises, experiencing mood swings, eating disorders or even "full-blown depression” will require long term crisis specific counselling and therapy.
