Hello, my name is Dainieri Hernandez, and I am 23 years old. Currently, I am facing significant hardships.

OUR STORY

My mom and I have faced many challenges together, including raising my younger brother, Eddiyan, who is diagnosed with autism. Our lives were profoundly affected on September 20, 2020, when we learned that my mother had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

She underwent 25 days of radiation and chemotherapy at the Miami Cancer Institute. Over time, she became extremely weak and was confined to a wheelchair due to severe pain and ceased eating.

Following emergency surgery, she had a colostomy. With less pain, she began to eat more and move around. We were hopeful, especially when she overcame several complications during visits to the ER. However, our hopes dimmed when we learned that the chemotherapy was ineffective and the cancer had spread to her liver. Recently, she made her final hospital visit, and shortly after, we received devastating news from her doctor: her liver was severely damaged and beyond medical help. She is now in home hospice care, given two months to live, and is peacefully deteriorating each day.

OUR HOPE

Before my mom passes, I want to assure her that I will take custody of my brother and that we will both have a future. My brother’s father has been absent since he was in grade 3, and at 16, he is unable to make his own decisions. He needs the continuity of my presence in his life. The legal process to become his guardian is comprehensive, challenging, and expensive, but I am committed to ensuring our well-being.

Here are my goals for using the funding:

Cover the legal fees to obtain guardianship of my brother.

Address any remaining medical and end-of-life expenses for my mother.

Establish a financial buffer to support our living expenses until we stabilize.
