I'm Beth, Dana (Aymar) Berry's sister, and I'm starting this GoFundMe on her behalf as I know she would have a hard time doing this for herself, although she desperately needs it.
On January 2, my sister went to the ER for what we thought would be unresolved 'walking pneumonia' but ended up being double lung pneumonia. She quickly went into septic shock, rushing her to ICU, putting her on a ventilator, and starting continual dialysis to help her fight for her life. Thanks to the proactive medical team at Advent Health - Winter Garden, within 10 days, she was off the vent, off dialysis, and out of ICU.
While we are still waiting on definitive answers as to the underlying cause of the pneumonia and sepsis, there are a few things we know will be considerable challenges for Dana as she transitions to a completely new normal. For one, as a result of some of the life-saving measures the care team had to take, she developed gangrene in both feet, which will require half of each foot to be amputated. Also, at this time, she is unable to move her left arm, although the doctors are hopeful this will improve. Dana will require extensive rehabilitation to get herself close to her prior level of function.
Through all of this, Dana has obviously been unable to work, and will be unable to for some time. While she can (and will likely) decide to opt in for COBRA which will help protect her insurance, we all know how extensive that cost is. Between the huge medical bills, the now huge insurance premium, and the household income going down by half for this family of 3, the Berry family can use our help. Please consider donating to help Dana, Doug (husband), and Addison (13) as they navigate this journey to creating their new normal.
***Update: Dana is scheduled for surgery this Friday for the double foot amputation. At that time, they’ll also go in and take a larger lymph node biopsy sample so they can finally get to the bottom of what might have caused all of this to happen. She’s been cleared by cardiology for the surgery, but understandably, this will be a big surgery, especially for her body which has already been through so much. We are praying for the minds and talents of the surgical team to be at its best on Friday and for God to continue blessing us with continued progress in Dana’s recovery. Please pray with us. More updates to come….
