Update:
On September 21st, our Brother, Daniel Santos, entered into the Atrium Pineville Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, for surgery, to remove a tumor. He was diagnosed with cancer. Since the tumor was removed he was in remission. But what followed days after lead to his death.
The hospital said they had to discharge him, just a day after his surgery. The Doctor let my brother know at 9am that he was being discharged. My Brother obliged. He didn’t understand why but agreed to leave the premises. Upon trying to find a ride (which took an hour or so), he was told he’d have to wait until 4pm later that day. Our neice was picking him up. A very caring nurse did what she could to help my brother, until the discharge nurse came in and began to harrass our Brother. The Discarge Nurse threatened to call the authorities on him if he did not leave the premises. He wasn’t sure why, he’s already told her he was waiting on his neice to pick him up. The discharge nurse broke protocol by not honoring my brother’s letting her know that he already contacted his neice to pick him up. She handed over responsibility to the guards at the hospital who did not do a good job on their part with de esculating the situation. The nurse also broke protocol by not offering our Brother an Uber back to his apartment. Our brother described it as discrimination. He had to walk himself out of the hospital, even after asking one of the nurses if she could help wheel him out, she refused. My brother had a tumor the size of a football removed and this is how you treat your patients?
It is not clear whether or not the Doctor gave my brother specific instructions on how to treat himself after surgery. If there was I can assure you my brother would’ve followed through with it. A year ago he had surgery to remove a small tumor. The doctors in NY told him to follow through with specific ways to recover and he did. As of yet we do not know if the doctor at Pineville told him anything on treating himself. Aside from the ill actions of the nurse, This is not the kind of treatment one would expect from a medical facility, especially in the Southern Part of the United States. This is negligence.
When Daniel left the hospital he had no place to go except back to our mom’s who gladly took him in as she was worried about him. But complications from the surgery, and no professional oversight lead to his body building up fluids in his legs, which ultimately caused a clot and lead to cardiac arrest.
On September 26th, 2024, Daniel, passed away of cardiac arrest, complications from the surgery.
My Brother was a kind and genuine man, with a big heart. He went out of his way to make others laugh, feel accepted and important. He cared so much for others he went out of his way to help those in need. He’d given his coat or jacket if you were feeling cold or unwell. He was kind and a loving person. I’m going to miss him.
We are currently seeking legal advice on the appropriate course of action. I can’t imagine this to be the only malpractice they’ve been accused of. All documented by video.
I’ve created this GoFundMe fundraiser to raise money for funeral costs. Any amount will help. Thank you to those who have donated. We are grateful for your contributions.
Please take care of yourselves and protect one another. Cherish those you love.
