Support David's Journey Home with Love

Dearest Friends and Family,

Our son, David, has been going through a rigorous and painful process of recovery after needing four surgeries on his brain between late June and August of 2024. Our family has been helping him in his recovery process in every way we collectively know how: nursing, educating, advocating, counseling, loving, listening, transporting, and being present.

He is currently living in an apartment in an assisted living facility called Charter in his son's area in Maryland, and, while doing so, gradually regaining his ability to speak, walk, and use his right arm, hand and leg. We are beyond proud of his determination and strength. Where and when others may have stopped trying, he has tried harder. And we are eternally grateful for the care our children, their spouses, and our grandchildren have given David. From June through mid September, a family member (and often 2) was with David all day every day. Because we are unable to be physically present for David, we have been giving financial support to 8 family members in strategic ways in order to support the supporters. Our financial support and contributions have totaled $25,000 and have helped with meals, transportation, and housing for our family members.

David's two children, Linnea and Dylan, organized a first time GoFundMe fundraiser during this past summer. And people gave generously. You may have been one of those people. If you are, thank you, thank you. These funds have paid for David's stay at the assisted living facility for the past two months, in addition to some of the related costs for the facility he stayed at prior.

The monthly fee at Charter, his present location, is $10, 000. While this amount sounds large, we have learned it falls within the midrange for such facilities. David has access to an on-call nursing staff 24 hours a day, meals, and a primary care physician. Other important things are included, such as rent, in this monthly cost. David's safety is of paramount importance to us, and Charter helps to guarantee this as much as is possible. As you may have already surmised, David has reached the cap of his insurance coverage.

We are now looking ahead at the later winter and early spring of 2025 and trying to gauge what will be needed for David to transition to his home near Chestertown, Maryland. We believe strongly this desirous goal is within reach. To ensure he makes a successful transition, we have decided to turn to our friends and family for financial support in this second GoFundMe fundraiser, as we cannot do this alone.

Our family acknowledges there are short term and long term financial needs involved in ensuring David's ability to live independently. Any and all donations will be put to use in a myriad of ways and greatly appreciated in the short and long run.

Thank you, dear ones, for taking time to read our letter and to consider possibly assisting David during his recovery and transition to his home. There's no place he'd rather be. There's no place we would rather he live.

We know from experience that people help when and how they are able. Assistance takes many forms and we treasure all of them. Thank you from our hearts.

With love and gratitude,

Patti and Jules Burgevin
