This Christmas season we got the heartbreaking news that Dennis has stage 4 colon cancer. It has metastasized to his lungs and liver and traditional oncologists are telling us we have 3 to 6 months left with him.
Chemotherapy and stent placement have been the treatment options given to Dennis at this time by traditional doctors. Two weeks ago Dennis got a stent placed to make him more comfortable by creating a more patent passage through the colon. Oftentimes, chemotherapy has many side effects that leave patients feeling sick and immunocompromised. In the spirit of increasing our time together and having Dennis feel as well as he possibly can, he has opted to move forward with a more holistic approach.
As early as next week, Dennis and Susan are hoping to travel to Mexico to a treatment facility called “Hope4Cancer” to begin treatment. Conversations and testimonials with doctors, patients, and families of survivors have led us to be hopeful for better outcomes and a gentler toll on his body.
Many people have asked for ways they can help our family at this time. This alternative treatment will not be covered by insurance and being abroad means that we will have to cover travel, meals, and unforeseen expenses, all while Dennis is not working and Susan takes time away from work to be with him during treatment.
Some days the stress and stages of processing this unexpected news can take a toll on all of us so we wanted to boost Dennis’ morale and spirits. Throughout the years, Dennis has been a jack of all trades; family photographer, handy-man-extraordinaire, and leader of various church groups and bible studies. It would mean so much to us if you could address a letter to Dennis sharing a sweet or funny memory, bible verse, or encouragement.
In addition to notes of encouragement, if Dennis has ever taken a portrait of your family, would you mind digging it up and writing a few words about the season of life he captured for you and your family in that particular photograph? We’d be so grateful and would love to revisit some of the photos he has taken throughout the years.
We don’t have all the answers, but dwell on the goodness of a loving maker who gives good gifts in the form of husband, dad, father-in-law, and grandpa. We appreciate your love, prayers, and support.
Love,
The Bigley’s
