On August 24, Everette Drake Childers suffered from an anoxic/hypoxic brain injury. Drake is presently in the Disorders of Consciousness program at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta with a tentative release date of November 20, 2024. We are excited to bring him home, but home improvements and transportation are definitely needed in order for Drake to live at home. Below is a list of what he needs……
I was given the Home Evaluation Note from the Occupational Therapist this weekend. It is a list of everything I need to do or get before the November 20 release date. I’m so fortunate that we already live in a wheelchair accessible home with the exception of the shower.
I need to remove the tub in my bathroom and install a roll in shower. I have someone coming out Tuesday at 6pm to give me a quote. Please pray that it all works out. We are going to need to get a tilt and space shower chair as well to use in the shower.
Luckily, insurance is going to cover the hoyer lift, hospital bed, and wheelchair that is needed. Thank you Jesus for good health insurance!!
I’m also going to have to get rid of the carpet in Drake’s room and replace it with a hard surface so that the hoyer, bed, and wheelchair all have the ability to move around when needed.
I’m very thankful that my dad and Uncle Chuck said they will replace the flooring for me once I get the materials.
Thank you Jesus for my family. I am incredibly blessed with a loving and supportive family. We may drive each other crazy at times, and before this is all over I’m sure we will all be batty, but I know when it’s needed, they are always there!! Thank you Lord —there’s no way I could do all this without them!!
I am also going to need to get a video monitor to place in Drake’s room. Drake is going to require 24/7 supervision and care, so I am going to need to create a schedule where there are two trained people at the house at all times. This is one of the most difficult things to figure out. I don’t want to solely rely on my parents, or sister as it’s not their responsibility and they have other responsibilities as well. I also do not want to rely all the time on my wonderful friends, who I know will step up. However, around the clock care with no less than 2 people while I have to work seems impossible. God, I know you make the impossible possible, so I’m trusting you on this one. Drake deserves no less than our best, so please make a way Lord.
Lastly, I am going to need to get a wheelchair accessible vehicle to be able to transport Drake to appointments and throughout the community. I have an appointment at the end of the month with Mobility Works to discuss my options. Please pray that it’s a smooth process as well .
Please pray that the Lord will make a way for all of our needs to be met. I have faith that God is going to provide, this is the one thing I’ve been certain about from the beginning and continue to know—God will provide. If he takes care of the birds, I know he’ll take care of us!!
Thank you for your prayers, please continue to pray fervently for the healing of Drake’s brain!!
