Hi! My name is Gina, I am the aunt of Elle and Katie. Elle & Katie were married a little more than a year ago. They are both hardworking, loving, honest, animal rescuers, who are just starting their lives together. At 21 & 22 they pretty much had life’s goals checked off and were looking at buying their first home. They are managers at their stores and financially doing well. The family all joined them house hunting just a little more than a month ago. A couple houses fell through (they were also on the top of what they could’ve afforded). Those houses falling through turned out to be a blessing really... A week later they found a tiny cabin that they could put onto their families property. They money they saved purchasing a smaller more economical home for a first place meant they could save money. With them both having jobs they could save for a better option in a few years. It’s very small, but it is cute, & perfect for a newlywed couple and some rescued fur babies!
They say things happen for a reason… & boy I have never believed it more than I do right now. Sometimes God closes doors because he knows you will need to take a different path.
Last Thursday Katie came home from work with a sore neck, by the next morning she had a golf ball size bump there. On the way to the hospital Elle called her work to say she would not be able to make her shift. This was the first time she ever called in.
They got to the hospital, Katie seen a DR, the words ‘cancer & oncologist’ were being repeated, and at that moment everything changed…. emotions were high, fear of the unknown, and now Elle hears from her employer that she either gets to work for her shift or to not bother coming back….
She explained they are with the DRs and her wife may have cancer. She tells them she is not leaving, & will call when she knows more. Her work, removed her immediately from the schedule, from the work chat, and sent her a message to talk to HR. She was also called a liar for saying she was in the hospital with an ill spouse.
There was no time to stress about the job that she worked her way up in… 60+ hrs, never missing a day, they had Katie’s health to worry about.
Fast forward a few days. Katie is diagnosed with stage 2/3 Hodgkins Lymphoma…. at just 22 yrs old it was a shocking diagnosis. Katies work (Tractor Supply) was AMAZING. They made sure she had coverage while she was hospitalized and have made plans so she can keep her job and be covered whenever she needs. They also have offered meals and visits.
Katie left the hospital and went to work the very next day. That is who Katie is. She is a hard worker, a kind soul, dedicated…& honestly inspirational. Those that know her and work with her can’t help but love her.
She has been the rock for Elle & now Elle wants to be her rock.
Elle decided to just move on, not to fight a company who would treat a loyal employee so awful. She applied for another job, one that would work with her so she could make sure she could be with her wife during her upcoming Chemo and Oncologist appointments. Ellie received a call saying that she didn’t pass a background check because her former employer denied she ever worked for them. (She does have pay stubs, however the damage is done, that kind of response does not make her look like the loyal employee she is)…
With the cancer diagnosis, new home purchase, and Elle losing her job…. Things look bleak. Katie plans to work through her chemo, but realistically that may not be an option. Elle was also denied her family emergency medical leave because her company claimed she never worked there.
With all this, they (thankfully) have a very small house payment ….
but the bills are going to start stacking up and with treatment, chances are Katie is going to be off of work for a bit.
Treatment is expected to take a few
months , IF it’s successful . This also is contingent on her bone marrow test coming out good as well. If it has spread to the bone marrow then the treatment will be a bit more in depth and longer.
Katie goes in Monday to get her port and then the chemo appointment follow shortly after.
I just want to help these two because they have been handed some pretty awful circumstances in the last few weeks and the next several months are going to be even harder. They are sweet, generous, animal lovers, who often help others in need…and I would love for that good karma to come back just a little to these two.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. We just want to get Katie back to her happy healthy self and back to the job she loves.
They also have other pay options
