I'm Esam Boray, a delegate at large for the state of Connecticut at the 2024 democratic national convention in Chicago. As a new US citizen of Egyptian origin, I fought for free elections, equal representation my whole adult life. I ended up in jail and exile for supporting democratization around the world. I aim to continue to do so, but I need your help.

Twelve years ago, I was forced to leave my home country after the Egyptian criminal court found me guilty of advocating for free and democratic elections. The Egyptian military put me in an iron cage while three judges cited why my election advocacy was illegal. This experience lasted for 18 months, the length of my trial.

Today, I am honored to share that I will be a delegate at the 2024 Democratic Convention in Chicago, representing the great state of Connecticut. This is a reality I would have never imagined in my wildest dreams. How does a brown immigrant with a funny accent go from the iron cage of the Egyptian criminal court to being a delegate in the most exciting democratic process on earth? It’s an honor worthy of all the tears one can shed and a responsibility I do not take lightly. There is no better time to share my experience with dictatorship and threats to democracy than this election cycle.
