Eston Mgala is a passionate permaculture practitioner and activist in Central Malawi. He has committed his life and career to helping Malawi have a healthy environment and healthy, thriving communities. Building on over 15 years of permaculture, agroecology and sustainable development experience, Eston recently founded the Center for Permaculture and Regenerative Living in Malawi. Eston is raising funds to purchase 30 acres of land and establish demonstration gardens, a community center, and training space, to name a few goals! This will be a central community hub for capacity building, providing hands-on experience in food and nutrition security, environmental restoration, agroforestry, water and soil health management, climate adaptation, livestock management, development of entrepreneurs, and demonstrating nature-based solutions.
The Center for Permaculture and Regenerative Living is a social enterprise registered with the Malawian government. We envision having our own land to develop a holistic functional center, which will be the first of its kind in Malawi. The Center will be established in a rural area connected to surrounding communities and with access to the main road. We envision starting with 30 acres of land and plan to expand in the future.
Solutions we will offer:
- Establish a training and demonstration center
- Provide mentorship and apprenticeship for youth, women and farmers
- Build and incubate agri-entrepreneurs
- Promote environmental restoration
- Establish a Community Center and Knowledge Hub
- Link with international volunteers and supporters
- Use sport as a tool for community development
- Establish an education scholarship for needy children
Problems we want to address:
- Food insecurity due to poor soils
- Water and rainfall challenges
- Environmental degradation
- Hunger and malnutrition
- Knowledge gaps in various due to illiteracy
- Unemployment
- Lack of sporting in rural areas
- Communication gaps between internationals and local people
Eston's investments using his own time and funds:
- Labor cost for the development of the center
- Transportation cost
- Center land registration
- Nurseries development
- Seeds and other crops and plants
- Trainings
