Support Extended Practice Event Series

Who we are: Our names are Sara Holwerda and Angela Lopez, and together we created Extended Practice - a collaborative project supporting the work and needs of artist mothers. Extended Practice (EP) celebrates and supports artist mothers by creating childcare-supported professional practice workshops, accessible exhibitions and community-building opportunities. This project elevates artist mothers, and provides a platform for them to assert themselves and their experiences as vital to art production and valuable to the art world. This project models a set of best practices in an effort to encourage artist parents and arts organizations to do more to address the practical and professional realities of parenting in the art world.

 

 

 

 

What we are doing: As we continue to navigate this complex and uncertain time as artists and parents, we have been finding ourselves craving connection and community. As a result we are putting together a new kind of virtual event series aimed at connecting our community of artist mothers.

 

We’re putting together a new kind of virtual event series aimed at connecting our community of artist mothers, supporting mental health, professional development, and a stronger sense of community and network.

 

We are working with Art Therapist Lucy Scott on multiple sessions where participants will have the chance to reflect on their needs, identify supports, and explore the connections between play, nurture, creativity and community. We are also excited to be working with Artist, Poet and Organizer A.Marinez on a series of meetups, focusing on connecting and sharing experiences and resources. We will follow these sessions up with a mini series of professional practice conversations with artist mothers with robust careers - giving participants facetime with the artist and the chance to ask pointed questions about balancing care-taking and building a career as an artist.

 

 

 

 

How we do it: We are just two artists trying to make space for artist mothers. We are committed to paying our artists, but we need your help! Please consider pitching in a little more - or even sponsoring an event if you are able - to allow us to offer this programming for free to those that need it. Please help us support artist mothers today!

$150 donation will make you an event sponsor!  Your name and company will be listed in all promotion and you will get a formal thankyou at the event you sponsor.

$50 donation will receive an Extended Practice zine in the mail. We used this zine at our wayfinding workshop on family day at the Museum of Contemporary Art. We will also give you a shout out on our Instagram.

$25 We will give you a shout out on our Instagram.

Transparency:

We are hoping to raise $3000 to support ten virtual events.

$1500 ($150 x 10) stipend for Lucy Scott, A.Martinez and other visiting artist

$1200 ($600 x2 for Sara and Angela) to pay for administrative labor

$300 for platform fees and unexpected costs
