Help Exuma Taxi Drivers Feed Families After Resort Closure
Donation protected
Then recent and sudden closing of Sandals Emerald Bay Resort Great Exuma on August 15, 2024, combined with hurricane season, has brought tourism to a halt on Great Exuma, creating joblessness for 100s of islanders.
Unlike resort employees, who received severance packages from the resort, taxi drivers were especially hit hard because they were not entitled to any type of compensation for lost revenues.
After living here for six months, we have observed that the people of Great Exuma are among the hardest working and faithful people on earth. Taxi drivers have been particularly hospitable and helpful, welcoming us as friends and even as part of their families.
The sudden closing of the resort came as a surprise to many drivers and leaves them with little money to buy food for their families in the immediate future. No doubt, as entrepreneurial as they are, many will find alternate ways to survive until the season comes back around in January, but could use some extra help to fill in until the the season comes back.
We are asking you to help us raise $1,000 per driver to pay for groceries and other essentials during this difficult season.
There are 55, active taxi drivers on the island and although we have a goal of $1,000 per driver, any amount that you’re able to donate would be well appreciated. We ask for immediate donations to provide relief for these families as soon as possible.
We are collecting donations until October 31, 2024, and at that time, will divide the total among all drivers.
We will transfer the donations to a local, Minister Patricia Wring, who has a Non-Profit organization called Out of Broken Pieces Ministry. Patricia will gift the donations to the drivers with the help of a member from the taxi association; 100% of donations will go directly to the drivers and their families.
