Support Family Devastated by Helene Landslide

My name is Kirk Schanze and I am organizing this fundraiser for my sister Carey and her husband Steve who suffered catastrophic damage from a massive landslide spawned by Hurricane Helene that completely destroyed their home, a small cottage/workshop, and their garage in Hendersonville, N.C. They lost all of their possessions beneath the debris field, which included family items from 50 years of marriage. The destruction of the structures and the land is so extensive that nothing is repairable or recoverable. The land is scarred beyond recognition and is no longer buildable. By the grace of God, Carey and Steve were out of town during the hurricane. Their two Labradors and their pet sitter were evacuated to higher ground the night before the landslide.

Following the hurricane, Carey suffered a life-saving emergency surgery which has, to date, been the focus of the family's energy. She is recovering so now they can begin to focus on recovery and moving on to a new life beyond the disaster.

The damage from the landslide was not covered by insurance and FEMA denied funds for clean up and debris removal.

Money raised through this fundraiser will be used cover the cost for heavy site work to excavate and clean up the site and the house debris and to help the family with replacement of daily-living necessities for their replacement home.
