For more than a month straight, the Indigenous authorities and people, with the support of student, feminist, and labor movements, have led a national strike that has paralyzed the country. They do so in response to the corrupt government establishment trying to invalidate the election results that saw the victory of the anti-establishment and anti-corruption party Movimiento Semilla led by Bernardo Arevalo and Karin Herrerra. The people are demanding for the resignation of attorney general Consuelo Porras and prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche, who have been accused of orchestrating a coup d’etat to prevent a peaceful and democratic transition of power.
Festivales Solidarios is a decolonial media platform made up of artists, journalists, researchers, designers, and cultural keepers who serve as a digital loudspeaker for the people and work in defense of the territory, criminalization, and historical memory. Founded by four individuals who were detained for protesting the murder of six Indigenous people in Totonicapán and met as political prisoners in 2013, the collective organize events in Guatemala and abroad, as well as share resourceful, multilingual popular reporting and testimony on their social media platforms. Their role has been no different in this indefinite national strike, sharing dozens of videos around the clock from the frontlines to the rest of the world.
Festivales Solidarios is currently in a financial and resource crisis, in particular the media team. They are asking us for support of their work and mission, which includes documenting what is happening in Guatemala to ensure that the world knows what is happening to Guatemala and can support them in this crucial moment for the people. Please follow them, support their work, share this post, and donate if you can! As shown by liberation struggles around the world, storytelling and being able to share popular narratives is literally a front of its own.
I will be collecting funds on their behalf and 100% of it will go to Festivales Solidarios; I will share receipts.
