Firefighter Injured on Deployment Reveals Cancer
Donation protected
For the past 40 years, Daren has proudly served his community as a dedicated firefighter with Corbett Fire Department #14. He has had the privilege of deployment on numerous wildfire conflagrations in Oregon and California over the past years.
While on deployment for the devastating recent LA wildfires in California, firefighter Daren Martin was injured and suffered multiple broken ribs. Upon receiving medical aid over the next few weeks, the doctors missed multiple vertebrae fractures in his lumbar and sacrum in his spine. He subsequently suffered a fall from his injuries that resulted in 2 ambulance rides to the emergency room. We finally decided to go to a different hospital after many missed, and life threatening issues. This is where we were given the devastating news of his his Multiple Myeloma cancer diagnosis. He is now on an aggressive chemotherapy treatment plan and is currently back in the hospital for a life threatening high potassium level and some scary liver issues.
His family, friends, and fellow firefighters have been such a great help in the last few days; however, his medical requirements have surpassed what we can do at the moment and his current
care requires 24/7 attention.
Donations so far have been used to purchase a special lift recliner, as Daren is unable to lay down or be in a bed. We were also able to get him into a skilled nursing facility for several weeks. We are hoping to hire an in-home caretaker soon.
We are also in need of additional support to help cover the growing medical expenses, including thousands of dollars in co-pays for his chemotherapy medications, necessary home modifications, medical devices, and other essentials to ensure his care and living environment remain safe and supportive.
