Donate to Support Flood Relief Efforts in Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka

The Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka are experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis caused by relentless rains and flooding. A severe depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, leaving tens of thousands of people in dire need of assistance.

In the Northern Province, 46% of the region's 54 major tanks are full or spilling, with an additional 20% nearing capacity. The Iranaimadu and Kalmadu tanks are dangerously close to overflowing, putting downstream areas like Maruthanagar, Panankandy, and Kandawalai at severe risk of flooding. Many tanks in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts are spilling, worsening the flood threat for thousands of families.

The Eastern Province has been battered by heavy rainfall, with Ampara district recording 311 mm in just 24 hours, forcing spill gates of critical reservoirs to open. Communities downstream, including Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, and Chilaw, are bracing for further flooding.

Over 20,000 people have been displaced, with many trapped in their homes, taking refuge in camps, or relocated to temporary shelters. Children and vulnerable families are struggling to access essential resources such as food, clean water, and medicine.

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), in collaboration with the North and East Economic Development Centre (NEED Centre), is mobilizing to provide immediate relief to affected families. Our focus is on delivering essential supplies and support to those most in need, especially children, the elderly, and those in isolated regions.
