Hello friends and family,
Many of you know that my daughter Abby has been on a breast cancer journey since August 2018, when she found a lump in her left breast. She was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer which required immediate (and aggressive) treatment. Starting with a port placement surgery for chemotherapy and an egg retrieval surgery for fertility preservation, she began a year+ of active treatment, involving chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and hormone therapy. Working as a self-employed massage therapist and at various part-time jobs, she didn't have any kind of disability pay, sick time or PTO. Where most people can take some time off as they go through treatment, Abby struggled to work sporadically, very appreciative of the flexibility of her employers.
This past winter she started to have more energy and returned to more regular work, and then COVID hit. Just as things started to open back up this spring, a breast MRI revealed a cancer recurrence, triggering multiple biopsies and a surgery on June 8. Even though she feels healthy, she is at high risk of a recurrence. Therefore, her medical team has recommended another series of aggressive treatments to hopefully keep her cancer from recurring or spreading. Abby is now facing a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in Boston that will require ~8-12 weeks recovery, as well as 12 months of chemotherapy. After just starting a new job with Piedmont (American) Airlines, she is now facing a long unpaid medical leave and very limited ability to practice massage therapy. Although Abby has been fortunate in that most of her cancer medical care has been covered by insurance, there are many other expenses that are piling up. If possible, we'd like to help her out financially so that she can focus on healing and recovery.
Thank you for your support!
