Support for Angie's Cancer Treatment Costs

Update from Angie 4/26/21:

This year has been quite the journey. I am very grateful for and humbled by all of the support that I've received from my community over the course of my treatment and am regretful to seek assistance again.

Mid-January, I went on medical leave to get my double mastectomy and to complete a 5-week course of daily radiation treatments. Currently, I'm receiving immunotherapy and hormone therapy infusions every three weeks, completing a course of physical therapy, undergoing treatment for skin and eye issues that she developed from her treatments, and preparing for another surgery. In order to heal, to address side effects, and to focus on my health, I requested to extend my medical leave until the end of June. Instead, I was released from my position without severance pay.

While I am actively seeking a new role, I am in the difficult position of negotiating reasonable accommodations and either time off during a probationary period for appointments and surgery or a later start with a new employer. Additionally, employers are not required to provide disability benefits to employees within their first year of their employment, which limit our rights and protections in any new role. Thus, I am proactively seeking something that will either make accommodations or allow me to start after my next surgery.

I am working out my benefits and actively applying for forms of assistance. To ensure that this does not cause a break my treatment and to help me to plan out the rest of my treatment, I am requesting financial support.

Thank you.

Original bio:
Our dear friend Angie has been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She will begin Chemotherapy on August 4th, and we are asking the support of her friends and their networks to help Angie during this difficult time. We are hoping to raise $8,000 dollars to cover some of her expenses including surgeries, procedures, treatment, medication, transportation, and mental health support.

Thankfully Angie has health insurance through her employer, but her costs will still be very high. Her yearly insurance deductible is $5,000 and she will have to pay co-insurance and co-pays until she reaches it. Her monthly co-pays for appointments alone will cost around $800/month. This is not including costs for medications, transportation, and the lost wages she may incur. The copays associated with her surgery will be at least $2,160, and these particular costs are separate from her deductible, imaging, and other necessary appointments.

Her deductible will also reset later in the winter (just before her surgery), as Open Enrollment through her employer will begin, and with it a new calendar year for her health insurance plan. This means that in just a few short months, she will have to meet her deductible again before insurance will cover her costs.

Angie knows that this is a significant ask, and she does not take the decision to ask for help lightly. If you are fortunate enough to have called Angie a friend, you know that she has one of the most pure and genuine hearts. She has likely made a home-cooked meal for you, made you laugh, or given you some kind of compassionate gesture or helping hand. We ask for your assistance in holding her up during this incredibly difficult time. No amount is too small or goes unappreciated.

On behalf of Angie, we thank you for your support.
