On June 11th, while working in the granite fabrication shop, Ben sustained an eye injury when the saw he was working with came into contact with the table causing the teeth to come off the blade. One piece of saw tooth hit Ben’s face and eye. A portion of the iris was cut and become detached and the lens was also cut. Ben has been seen by two specialists in Salt Lake City and Boise, who explained that he will need surgery to have a prosthetic iris installed and a new lens. He has developed a cataract on the lens due to trauma from the accident.
It is still unknown when the surgery will take place as the swelling of his eye will need to go down before they can perform the procedure. That reduction of swelling could take up to two months. Unknown at this time, because of the swelling, is the possibility of nerve damage to the iris and/or damage to the cornea. Ben said that the specialist he saw in Boise knows how to perform the prosthetic iris replacement surgery, but to date has never performed the surgery. We are also looking into options and possibly seeing if there might be a doctor that has experience with this surgery.
Ben is self employed and has three kids, ages 10, 5 and 1 ½. His wife, Kacey, is a stay at home wife/mom. Workers’ compensation will only cover 67%. This could not have come at a more inconvenient time with Covid-19. We are hopeful that Ben’s surgery will be successful. But he may be in for a long recovery time. In the mean time, expenses continue. There will be uncovered medical bills as well as other expenses. Any assistance will be much appreciated.
