Support for Cafe Trio

Donation protected
This fundraiser is to support Chris and Tai, the owners of Kansas City restaurant Café Trio. They are family members of my friend and colleague, who has shared some of the challenges they’ve faced recently. Café Trio is a favorite place to visit—amazing food, great service, and a fun place to visit with friends. I know many others who feel the same, so I felt compelled to try to help.

Café Trio has been closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic for about the last 3 months. As with many restaurants, they have experienced challenges with the loss of income, while so many expenses (like rent and utilities) still must be paid. As the restaurant was recently preparing to reopen, they experienced additional damage to their building, which has a Midtown/Westport address, but is near the Plaza area protests. Although they are waiting to find out if they will have insurance or other support cover the repairs, they have had to delay their reopening. I’ve set the fundraiser goal for $10,000. All proceeds will go to support their uncovered costs, whether that be rent/utility payments, increased health and safety requirements, or to repair damages.

I’ve learned a little about the local owners of Café Trio as I was looking into this fundraising effort. Chris was born in KC and Tai is an immigrant from Vietnam, who moved here with his family when he was 3. They have owned Café Trio since 2004, when it was located on Broadway. They are local to KC and have done so much to support the KC community. Not only do they feature a local artist of the month, they have also done many benefits for the LGBTQ community. They’ve also partnered with local charities including: Kanbe’s Markets, Kansas City Free Eye Clinic, Aidswalk KC, SAVE inc., KC Pet Project, Ronald McDonald House, Bra Couture, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Unicorn Theatre. They are a Kansas City Original (Locally Owned Restaurant Association) and members of the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association and Missouri Restaurant Association. Chris and Tai are exactly the kind of local small-business owners we need to support in Kansas City!

Café Trio is facing difficult times, but through it all, they continue to stay positive. Tai recently shared this comment on Café Trio’s Facebook page: “Broken windows and stolen goods are nothing compared to broken hearts and stolen lives. We stand in solidarity. Our concern is healing our community; our Kansas City community and the black, white, brown, yellow and LGBTQIA members that comprise it. Don’t worry about us. We will rebuild. And together, one kind act at a time, we will rebuild the world and community we share and love.”

I hope you’ll join me in showing Chris and Tai a little kindness, so they rebuild and remain strong well into the future! Thank you for your support!
