The Short Story:
In early January, Callie tested positive for COVID-19. A few weeks later, she was admitted into the hospital for pain, numbness, and weakness in her legs believed to stem from the positive diagnosis. She quickly lost the ability to walk without assistance and was admitted to the ICU. She was treated with IVIG for suspected Guillain Barre Syndrome, but the treatment caused negative side effects, including chest pains, and the doctors stopped the treatment.
At the present moment, Callie is in a short-term rehab facility with no sure answers for what is happening. She is unable to walk and is currently wheelchair-bound. She is participating in intensive Physical and Occupational Therapy in the highest hopes of regaining strength and learning to walk again.
Callie has been unable to work due to these health issues that all hit her out of nowhere. Callie was nervous when she tested positive for COVID-19, but no one expected this turn of events as Callie has not even hit 30 yet. Due to this major health crisis, Callie does not currently have any income. She has filed for short-term disability and will only be receiving partial pay for the next several months once it does take effect. Everything after that will be playing it by ear.
In addition to Callie’s income decreasing during this time, bills have never been higher. She has been inundated with copays, deductibles, hospital bills, etc etc etc. She also maintains her usual bills of rent, insurance, a car payment, groceries, and having to provide for her sweetheart of a cat, Diego. Any contribution of any amount would serve to support Callie during one of the most difficult times of her life. Please consider giving if you can. Please consider sharing if you can. Callie also requests that those who believe in the power of prayer please pray for her and for answers and recovery.
The Long Story:
On January 4, Callie was diagnosed with COVID-19, which subsequently turned into COVID-related pneumonia by January 14. During that time, Callie developed worsening weakness in her legs and debility. She was holding onto walls to walk and could only stand or walk about 2 minutes at a time before needed to rest.
She went to the ER on January 30 due to severe, debilitating pain in both legs and was admitted to a room from there. Many tests were done and the initial MRI showed evidence of Guillain Barre Syndrome. The next day, Callie discovered that both her bladder was paralyzed and MDs suspected her bowel was paralyzed as well. Her numbness continued ascending and her legs continued to become weaker and heavier and filled with burning sensations. Callie was unable to sleep due to the pain for several days at a time.
On February 1, Callie was admitted to the ICU. She began to receive IVIG to treat the suspected GBS, but this treatment resulted in increased pain and negative side effects. The chest pain caused by the IVIG worried the medical team and caused them to immediately stop this treatment. Callie was then transferred to another hospital facility that could provide more specialized care. During this process, the numbness and loss of feeling continued to become worse.
While in the hospital, Callie began receiving Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy in hopes of regaining strength and mobility. On February 6, she was working with the therapy team to begin walking with a walker. She was able to use her upper body to support herself while her feet slid on the floor. It was incredibly difficult and nearly impossible to lift her feet off the ground due to the pain, weakness, and loss of feeling.
As of February 11, Callie has been admitted to a short-term rehab facility to participate in intensive Occupational and Physical Therapy. She currently is unable to use a walker and solely uses a wheelchair at this time. She was able to complete Physical Therapy where she was placed in a harness connected to the ceiling in order to begin learning to walk with a walker. Callie described this as a very difficult task, with her muscles in her backs, hips, and legs spasming. However, she was overjoyed to begin the process of regaining her mobility and a sense of normalcy.
At the present moment, the care team and doctors are not sure what exactly is causing the numbness and weakness and that is causing the loss of mobility. They do have their guesses, and will continue to complete tests and work with Callie to do the very best they can to get to the root cause and work on regaining her life.
Callie has been a fighter throughout this process and continues to strive for healing. As mentioned above though, all of this came as a complete surprise, leaving Callie to have to file for short term disability. This has not yet been processed, leaving Callie with no current income. When it does though, she will receive partial pay. However, her deductibles, copays, and bills continue to stack up. Any help would be much appreciated!
