On January 5, just five days into the new year, my family’s world got turned upside down. Carole was having trouble breathing, and felt a sharp pain in her chest. She went to the emergency room, and they told her she had a pleural effusion and was in heart failure. This was a huge shock for all of us. The next day they did an echocardiogram, and told us her heart is only functioning at 10-15%. The cardiologists believe the heart failure was caused by the chemotherapy she received following her breast cancer diagnosis 15 years ago. She was able to beat the cancer, but the lasting effects of the treatment have taken a toll on her health. She stayed in the hospital for 6 days, being transferred from Medina Hospital to Cleveland Clinic Main Campus halfway through her stay. She was able to come home to be with her family again, and was put on several medications to hopefully improve her condition, but ultimately they’re not sure if she will improve and may need a heart transplant eventually. She is temporarily out of work, and the medical bills are piling in. She should be focusing on getting healthier for her family, not how she’s going to pay for her hospital stay. My mom has worked as a Hospice Nurse for almost six years, going out of her way to be there for families during some of the worst times of their lives. She is the strongest person I know, and if you know her, you love her. Any help for my mom is much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read about her journey.
