A Good Samaritan Nearly Loses His Life Saving a Dog
The Donohue family’s life changed forever late one afternoon on April 19, 2020. Harvey and Lori Donohue’s only son, Connor, a Detroit Police Officer in training, was on his way home from work when he stopped to rescue a stray dog on the I-96 freeway. Connor was struck by a malicious driver who fled the scene, but was later apprehended by Detroit Police. Connor was found not breathing at the scene but was brought back to life by a Michigan State Trooper.
The Physical & Mental Damage
Connor suffered: 11 broken ribs, massive facial injuries; a broken arm; 11 lost teeth; and a TBI-traumatic brain injury. He was in hospitals and neurological care facilities for nearly 3 years. He is non-mobile without vocal abilities and may need dependent therapeutic and occupational care for the rest of his life.
Connor Returns Home
Since August 2023, Connor is now being cared for at home. When asked how they are handling the daily in-home and legal challenges they face, Harvey replies, “we are just happy to have our son home where we know he is getting the best care possible.” The Donohue’s never complain or grumble but are hopeful about Connor’s future and are committed to ensuring their son gets everything he needs to thrive.
Challenges
The Donohue’s living room has now become Connor’s bedroom with his therapeutic hospital bed, physical therapy table, Hoyer-lift hoist, and shelves lined with meds, adult briefs and wipes. At this time, they do not have the convenience of handicap accessible rooms in their home, just ramps to get Connor in and out of the house.
