Support for Courtney during her Health Crisis

Donation protected

I have created this go fund me to support my  beautiful sister-in-law Courtney. Courtney has been off work (having to close down two thriving acupuncture practices) since this past July do to a serious condition called MALS.  Both she and my brother Gerry, are self employed and all of their time off has been without pay.

Here is what Gerry recently posted about her diagnoses.

Hey Everyone. I wanted to update you all on my amazingly strong wife Courtney Somers. At the end of July of this year, Courtney was diagnosed with a rare condition called Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (or mals). You can read more about mals here -
https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/median-arcuate-ligament-syndrome/, but basically, there is thickening of a ligament that causes a compression of blood flow to the upper digestive tract organs. For an unlucky few, this can result in pain, sometimes very extreme pain. Among several other symptoms.
Courtney has been in a moderate amount of pain at all times since July 26th, with several occurrences of extreme pain. We've gotten to know the emergency department at the QEH far better than anyone should, unless you work there.

Relief is hopefully on the way. We are currently in Kentville, Nova Scotia, where Courtney is going to have a median arcuate ligament release performed laparoscopically, tomorrow morning at 11:30. Total symptom relief can be possible, but there are never any guarantees with surgery; more may be required, there are risks with the surgery (the ligament in question holds the aorta against the spinal column), and the recovery time can be substantial (6-8 weeks before regular activity, if all goes well).

Court is a big believer in prayer. So, if you have the chance, and prayer is your thing, we'd love if you could say one for her. If not, just keep her in your thoughts tomorrow morning!

Thanks everyone!

Since his post Courtney has had this major surgery and we pray that it provides the intended results of returning to a normal life. BUT there are no guarantees and even with perfect results she still has a long road of recovery and is in constant pain. Her surgeons believe it will take a minimum of 3 months for Courtney’s system to begin re-training itself and moving towards regular function.

With all this being said, it will be quite sometime before she can return to work.

Basic recap... two self employed individuals now down to one income. That one income also greatly reduced do to much time taken off so care can be provided. Very very little government support. This all equals a huge financial strain with no known end in sight.

So as you can imagine, the emotional stress of this situation has almost been as extreme as the physical pain Courtney has been enduring.
Please join in helping with any type of donation so that together we can help alleviate some of the stress of this situation.
