Support for Derek “Dink” Burpo’s Family After Tragedy

Dear community members,

It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic loss of Derek Burpo, affectionately known as ‘Dink’ by his family and friends. Dink lost his life late last night, January 1, 2025, becoming Birmingham’s first homicide of the new year. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Barbara ‘Bobbie’ Gaiter, his father, Edward Burpo, and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues who cared for him deeply.

As our family gathers to comfort one another, we are touched by the outpouring of support and love we are receiving from our community. While we are heartbroken by the senseless violence that took Dink from us too soon, we take comfort in the kindness and compassion surrounding us.

Immediate funds will help assist with Bobbie’s living costs, as Dink was her primary caregiver.

A little bit about Dink

Dink was a kind and steady soul, providing consistent love and support to those around him. He was smart and studious, with a strong work ethic. Although quiet, he was very observant and found unique ways to show his love for others.

Dink graduated from Huffman High School in 1991 and then Alabama State University. He also had his MBA, and was working toward a Ph.D. in marketing.

After ASU, Dink worked for several car dealerships and insurance companies, starting his own insurance firm in 2020. When COVID-19 disrupted business, Dink started working at Domino’s to support his mother.
