As Diana’s daughter, I wanted to share with you what my mom is currently going through and ask for your help. This year has been really tough on my mom – mentally, physically, and financially. She has been unemployed off and on for the last few years and more recently is battling numerous health issues. This has been made more complicated due to her lack of adequate health insurance and is contributing to significant financial hardship.
In March, my mom got diagnosed with Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). It causes painful leg swelling during times of inflammation. CVI caused her to get Cellulitis, a painful skin infection. She had to take time off from work to manage pain and heal from the infection.
Most recently, a golf ball sized mass became visible on my mom’s left breast. Over the course of 3 weeks, my mom was in and out of doctor’s offices, and the hospital. The golf ball sized mass grew to be the size of a baseball, and multiple doctors disagreed on the severity of my mom's case and the proper treatment. Meanwhile my mom has been in severe pain. Ultimately, she had to drive from Port Aransas to Austin, TX (4 hrs) to get in front of a surgeon. The Austin doctor was stunned that the serious infection had not been treated sooner. On June 19th, my mom was finally able to get surgery. Her surgeon is very hopeful that nothing is cancerous, and that all this turmoil was caused by a severe infection in her left breast.
Due to unemployment, and minimal health insurance, the medical bills are a huge financial burden - over $27,000 (of what we have seen so far). She has a new job that she is starting in July. This will be a new beginning for her, and I am hopeful that she will be able to focus on healing and getting some normalcy back in her life.
My mother is one of the most giving people I know - too generous at times when she herself is going through some tough times. I think for anyone that knows her, we can all attest to that. She has struggled in multiple ways in recent years. For all those who have been there to help- I am forever grateful for all you are doing.
Alleviating the added financial stresses that are inevitable in situations like these is one way we can help. That said, I understand that this is a difficult time for many amidst this pandemic.
I will personally be administering the funds raised through this Go Fund Me initiative. We appreciate anything that you can contribute to help pay these unexpected medical expenses. Every bit counts.
With extreme gratitude and appreciation for your support and generosity, Lauren
