We are heartbroken to announce the tragic, unexpected passing of our beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, partner, friend, community member, and father-to-be, D’von Terry, a bright, bubbly, and hilarious soul cherished by all who knew him.
D’von passed unexpectedly due to complications from Sickle Cell disease, a disease he had fought against his whole life, on Thursday, June 27, 2024. In the early morning of Monday, June 24, D’von was getting ready for work and felt an onset Sickle Cell attack and headed to the emergency room and was admitted.
The following 24- hours were very tough, and D’von was resilient, fighting to breathe as Acute Chest Syndrome (ACS) was attacking his ability to breathe, putting severe stress on his lungs and his heart. By Tuesday evening, D’von was exhausted, and doctors recommended he be sedated to try and relieve stress on his body and ease his pain.
Immediately following his sedation procedure, D’von suffered cardiac arrest and died for three minutes before medical staff brought him back to us. However, he was in incredibly critical condition, as doctors were trying everything they could do to keep his oxygen levels and blood pressure up.
By the early morning of Wednesday, June 26, D’von’s heart had failed. He had four more procedures in an attempt to save his life, the last procedure described as a “Hail Mary” by his doctor, which gave us a glimpse of hope because if you knew D’von, he loved the game of football, and this was his way of saying he was fighting to stay alive. The surgery was successful, but D’von was still critical and needed to fight.
On early Thursday morning, a clergyperson approached the large group of family and friends to join in a group prayer for D’von. As the clergyperson concluded her prayer and was leaving, the doctor entered the room to inform his family and friend that D’von had passed.
If you knew D’von, you loved him. He was a cherished personality in our community whose warmth and joyful spirit resonated deeply with all who knew him. Every interaction with D’von ended with laughter and a huge hug, and he always left a remarkable impression on all who knew him. He loved people, and people loved him.
At home, D’von was a devoted Pittsburg Steeler fan, cook, and unbelievable uncle to his nephews Marcus and Jordan. His mom, dad, grandma, brother, partner, and friends were the cornerstones of his world.
D’von’s departure has left his family, partner, and friends with a profound sense of loss and many unforeseen expenses. He was about to be a first-time father to a beautiful baby girl and could not contain his excitement.
As his family and friends navigate this difficult time, we are reaching out to our community for support in helping cover the costs of his funeral and memorial services, with any remainder going to settle his estate and support his soon-to-be-born baby girl.
Any contribution, big or small, will help us honor D’von’s memory in the way he truly deserves and take care of his daughter the way he would. Your generous support for D’von and his family by contributing to his GoFundMe campaign will make a significant difference.
Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support during this incredibly challenging time.
