Support for Eric "Randy" Johnson

Eric “Randy” Johnson underwent a double lung transplant in October, 2013 and after several months of the initial procedure and confinement at home, he has endured numerous setbacks since returning to work, including several hospitalizations. Over the course of this past year Randy’s transplanted lungs have deteriorated to the point that he was been placed on another transplant list. Sadly, one of the transplanted lungs had extensive damage, therefore another double-lung transplant was deemed unsafe; however, a donor match was received on January 11, 2021 enabling the doctors to perform a single transplant of his right lung.

Due to complications following his second transplant, Randy has been confined to the Critical Care Unit at UAB, requiring daily dialysis and he continues to experience blood pressure issues. In addition, the necessary steroid and anti-rejection medication has resulted in brittle bones, causing periodic fractures, thus requiring additional surgeries and procedures. It appears Randy’s hospitalization will be long-term.

Randy has been employed with the State of Alabama Transportation Department for over 27 years and has recently exhausted the accumulated and donated leave allowed by his employer. With no other means of income, and in order to avoid a drastic increase in Insurance premiums, Randy had to make a decision to retire on July 1, 2021, with a considerable salary reduction, while expenses outside his insurance coverage will continue to significantly escalate.
