Support for Eta Storm Evacuees in Ixcán, Guatemala
Donation protected
Tropical Storm Eta hit Guatemala in early November, exacerbating already precarious living conditions in the country. Mudslides buried homes, killing dozens. Torrential rains flooded fields, and high winds further battered crops. Swollen rivers toppled bridges, leaving communities stranded.
In the Ixcán, Quiché region some 575 families evacuated their homes to escape the rising waters. Beyond their immediate survival needs, they are facing mid-term food shortages due to crop loss.
Your donation will provide food and water to people living in shelters and will help ensure their food security in coming months. A respected local organization, Puentes de Paz (Bridges of Peace), will administer the aid.
The government has provided minimal emergency aid, opening just one shelter in the entire Ixcán region. Some relief efforts have prioritized plantation owners' belongings over workers' lives. Meanwhile, in solidarity, Indigenous and mestizo communities in Guatemala's highlands have sent clothing and food to affected areas. Will you join them in supporting Eta evacuees today?
