Support for food & funds: Educating Rural Children in Zambia

Malala Yousafzai: “One child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world.”

There are no schools in rural Zambia. In the larger cities, children and their parents can pay money to attend private school, but it is not required. If you have no money and no school, then opportunities to learn the fundamentals of education are almost non-existent.

I stayed with the Lichaha family for the better part of a week in September of 2023. Josephine and her sister took me to the airport so that I could begin my journey home. She works so hard to make sure that the children learn basic math and reading skills.

Last month, Josephine posted that the children in her care would go without lunch and snacks while in her care because they did not have the means to provide the children with food. No child should be hungry, let alone be asked to learn on an empty stomach. It wasn't much, but after reading her comments, Leigh and I sent over $100.

She informed me that the funds would feed all of her children in the program for a month! When I read that, I couldn't help but stop and think about how something so small could reap such great benefits in the lives of an underserved population.

My goal for this fundraiser is to feed the children from now until the end of 2025.

When we think about where and how we spend our money, and how effective even a small amount would be in the lives of the children in this program, I hope that you will consider donating. Every dollar is one more full belly, one more smile, one more child that can focus on the task at hand so that hopefully one day they will be able to provide for their loved ones.
