Support for (Gary) R.G. Miller on is recovery
Donation protected
Robert Gary Miller-Lahiaaks was born in 1950 on the Six Nations Mohawk Reserve in Brantford Ontario. At the age of two he was taken from his Longhouse family and his community. Miller served eleven years (1953-1964) in the Mohawk Institute, or as it was known to student-inmates- the Mush Hole. Along with his world famous landscape interpretations and portraits, R. G. Miller is one of Canada’s most distinctive Indigenous artists at work today, reflecting his own Indigenous experience in a multi-faceted artistic conversation across diverse modes and cultures.
On November 25, 2020 approximately 6:30am, Gary (R.G.Miller) and passenger Tobie Muir were headed to Peterborough, ON from Bancroft, ON for an appointment for his foot (due to his diabetes) in a blizzard, and they were traveling about 80km/hr and before they were able to react, a large commercial snow plow truck came into their lane, head on.
Their vehicles collided to a dead stop. Gary and Tobie survived and him being a larger man, had to be pulled though the passenger window.
They were rushed to the hospital in Bancroft where his daughter Moragh, raced as soon as she heard. Within 5 hours of the accident they were released from Bancroft Hospital although he was complaining that his back was broken but the hospital released him and three days later he was admitted and back to the hospital in Bancroft with three crushed vertebrae and rushed him directly to a hospital in Kingston, ON. When he got to Kingston, his family was finally able to talk to the doctors and surgeons about what had happened and he was sent for surgery immediately . As time went on at the hospital in Kingston they said he was okay to go home and was released for Christmas. Then on Boxing Day he suffered a stroke. Due to a snow storm, the PSWs were unable to come and check him and 911 was called, when the ambulance arrived his vitals were 70/40, grave condition.
Toby Muir also suffered a broken back in the accident.
He was then rushed back to Kingston hospital where they had found his back had a severe infection as a result of the surgery.
Along with the strokes he suffered from the accident, he then had kidney failure.
And once they stabilized his kidneys they realized that the MRSA attacked the valves in his heart so now he had a scheduled heart surgery.
The surgeons and doctors were not sure if he would survive this, but he’s a fighter.
All together went through three back surgeries, two heart surgeries, three strokes, MRSA kidney failure, twice blood clots and now must learn how to walk again all within a few months at 70 years old

As it turns out, his home in Bancroft, ON house is out of bounds due to non wheel chair access and as a result he's out of the hospital and now staying at a hotel in Peterborough, his daughter Moragh acting as his full time caregiver.
Although the accident was no fault of Gary’s, the insurance companies are currently denying him a settlement. Transportation is a challenge as his daughter drives a small vehicle, so he has been confined to his hotel room in Peterborough since the third week of January 2021.
His home is not suited to accommodate his needs without extensive renovations, and the insurance companies continue to stall. Gary would love to be spending his time in the outdoors taking pictures and sketching, and working on regaining his memory loss suffered though this horrendous ordeal.
Let's bring Gary back into reality, he's not old and feeble yet… he's a Miller and he’s a soldier. He needs the help of those who have loved and appreciated his art and work in Native Community
