Hello - my name is Don McIver, and I’m asking for your support for my lifelong friend Jerry Tolve. Like Jerry, I am a Nutley, NJ native and moved to Florida in 2019. I stay in close touch with my NJ family and friends, and try to get back there as frequently as possible to visit them. I have many fond memories of my 56 years living in the area!

Jerry was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2020, a debilitating affliction with no known cure. I can’t imagine the suffering ALS brings to a person, their family and loved ones, but I regret to say that Jerry has been dealt another blow this week. It came in the form of historic flooding from Hurricane Ida. I am truly heartbroken for him and his family.

Jerry’s basement was flooded with 5 feet of water this week, destroying nearly every possession there he cherished. The loss included a significant amount of musical equipment (his profession and passion), sports and music memorabilia, and important life necessities such as a customized bed and stair lift. In addition, his son’s car was ruined. The monetary loss is significant, and the additional loss of cherished memories is incalculable and gut wrenching.

I request any monetary support you can give to this remarkable person and his family. The financial toll is huge, and Jerry needs support to replace the durable medical equipment lost. Given his location in a typically non-flood area, it is unlikely insurance will come close to making Jerry and his family whole. And his needs are urgent.

A Nutley, NJ native, lifelong musician and gifted singer, Jerry has entertained thousands in the NJ/NY area for almost 40 years. Even with his affliction, he has managed to perform at a number of Northern NJ restaurants, including Buco’s and Bareli’s. He still lives in Nutley with his wife Sherrie, and his two children Natalie and Gerard.

Since his diagnosis, Jerry has lived in the basement of his home. There, he was able to play music, record, and continue his pursuit of his true calling and passion. In that haven, he was surrounded by very expensive musical equipment, a lifetime of memorabilia from his work and famous people he’s met, and a rare music collection that is unparalleled. When I visited him there, I was awestruck, and I could clearly see the joy it gave him.

Jerry is unsure of how much time he has left with us, so the outpouring of love and support for him is a testament to his character and his positive impact on so many people. Through his ordeal, Jerry has shown such strength and faith in God, it’s remarkable to all that know him. He is truly a remarkable friend to me and countless others.
