Support for Katelynn’s Battle Through Cancer
Donation protected
In August 2019, it started as a fall and a bone fracture on Katelynn’s right shoulder. This later became a growing tumor and resulted in a diagnosis of osteosarcoma. The bone cancer later spread throughout her lungs as a result as well. My whole family was in shock by the news. This is the first time that cancer had struck our family, especially in someone so young, no less.
Katelynn is my niece, and she is 8 years old. She goes to a Fort Bend ISD elementary school and does her best in class every single day. She loves to make friends and is always kind to others. Her favorite hobbies are drawing, painting, and making crafts using her creative mind. She has two brothers and a sister that she plays with (and annoys) every day.
Since her diagnosis, Katelynn must stay at home until the completion of her chemotherapy and the end of the year. Even though this means that Katelynn won’t be able to see her friends, she still smiles and is happy for the get-well cards that she has received. Even though she’s tired every day, Katelynn still finds the strength to paint and draw with her siblings.
This turn of events had created an obstacle for Katelynn’s family to get through. Katelyn’s will and perseverance created the positivity that our family needed to move forward. However, the out of pocket cost for the first two chemotherapy treatments has already amounted to $1,600. In addition to receiving additional chemotherapy treatments, Katelyn will undergo two surgeries totaling more than $5,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. One is for the tumor on her right shoulder that had grown from her fall, and the other surgery would take bone from her kneecap to replace the lost bone in that shoulder. Other high costs include the weekly hospital visits where she stays for days at a time, each costing more than $1,000 every time. She is going to one of the best cancer treatment hospitals in the country and it comes with an unlikely financial cost.
Katelynn’s family consists of 6 members in total. It’s her mom and dad and her three siblings. Her dad, Cuong, is the sole provider while her mom stays at home to raise them. Cuong works long, hard hours to provide for their family. However, the medical expenses have been taking priority over the normal living expenses and bills that they have to pay. It’s a big financial burden for Katelyn’s family, and they are now asking for help in any form it can come.
This GoFundMe page is to help support Katelynn Nguyen’s battle against cancer and to help support her family’s need to cover the high costs of treatments and surgeries. Donations will impact Katelynn’s successful recovery, and her family of six’s financial stability.
