Anyone who knows Liz, knows that she is someone that would help anyone in need. Whether through prayers, food, shelter, or simple words of encouragement, she always tries to leave a person in a better state than before they crossed paths. For several years, she has experienced a gradual decline in health preventing her from enjoying the things that bring her joy and happiness. Things like family, friends, travel, and even most foods as her dietary needs have become highly restrictive. Liz has struggled for many years to find an accurate and definitive diagnosis and treatment plan that addressed her needs. Doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist, she fought to find answers that never came. In February of 2021, that fight brought her to Mayo Clinic. There she was told that she would need to have a liver transplant due to non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. The reduced functioning of her liver has caused havoc throughout her body. Most recently, she has taken a turn for the worse as the space in her chest surrounding her lungs continually fills with fluid, collapsing her lungs. This fluid must be drained several times a week to allow room for her lungs to expand. This process is extremely painful and carries significant risks of infection developing. The only way to stop this process is to have the transplant. These procedures have an extremely high rate of success and will ultimately restore her quality of life and extend it for years to come. Without this procedure, Liz’s time would be measured in months instead of years.
The financial burden of a transplant procedure makes it nearly inaccessible. The cost of the testing to identify a living donor alone is $50,000 dollars and the procedure itself near half a million dollars. Liz is fortunate to have insurance willing to share in that burden, but the personal expense will be significant and devastating. Raymond and Liz have worked very hard throughout their lives to plan for a retirement having the health and financial security to see their grandchildren and share their love with them as they grow. With your generosity, Liz and Raymond can still make that dream a reality. Several potential living donors have already been identified and Liz is scheduled to begin the pre-testing procures in April 2021 at the Mayo Clinic. There will be significant amounts of travel, lodging, and other direct and indirect expenses for both Liz and her donor(s) in the coming weeks, all of which will not be covered by insurance. Help is urgently needed and any contribution to saving Liz’s life, no matter how large or small, will be so deeply appreciated by all of us that love her dearly.
