My name is Naji Al-Nahhal, a 25-year-old Palestinian, from the city of in the Gaza Strip. I was a professional footballer in the Rafah Youth Football Club, and I also played for the Palestinian national beach football team. But then, the brutal aggression on Gaza destroyed every aspect of life, including my dream of continuing my footballing career.
My family consists of 19 members: 8 adults, 2 youngsters and 9 children. We were displaced from our homes and now we find ourselves among countless other displaced families. My family and I have endured extraordinary hardships in a short period of time. Our lives have been turned upside down by the ever-present specter of violence in Gaza.
Before this latest aggression, I played as a left-back for prominent football clubs in Gaza like Beit Hanoun Sports Club, Services Rafahp Club and Shabab Rafah. But since October, not even the stadiums were spared from air strikes.
This is my niece Jude, who was born during the war. She came to our lives in such difficult circumstances. I wish she would grow in beautiful home, but unfortunately she only has our small tent. But the hardest thing about all of this is that she is just 1 month old and until now, her eyes have not seen peace even for a single day. But despite all this suffering, Jude keeps her beautiful smile. She is the source of love and hope for us in this war.
This is me, Naji. The footballer who had always dreamed of representing the national team and my nation, Palestine. The one chanting with his football fans. The one who scored a lot of goals.
Before this aggression, I had the opportunity to play for big clubs. Now, my career has been destroyed and my future remains uncertain. I have lost many friends, teammates and also coaches. But I’m a survivor, and I still have hope to pursue my dreams to be able to support my family.
