Hello, we are Global Peace Women (GPW) and as part of our initiative for building peace, specifically in the East Asia region, we are actively working to provide support for North Korean women defectors in South Korea. Moreover, we are making efforts to realize the “Korean Dream,” which is a vision for creating a peaceful and unified Korea with the ideal of “Hongik Ingan” (홍익인간): living and working for the greater benefit of humanity.

Brief Historical Background
The Korean peninsula has been divided between North and South Korea since 1953. In North Korea, about 18 million people of 25 million experience serious human rights violations, economic struggles, food insecurity, malnutrition and other health issues under the leadership of the Kim regime.
More than 1,000 North Koreans have defected from their homeland every year to South Korea for political, ideological, religious, economic, or other personal reasons. Today, an overwhelming 85% of the 33,000 North Korean defectors in South Korea are women (as of 2018). They have had to make a hard transition and adjust to a totally different society not only as women, but also as workers, students, and mothers.
Although defectors are welcomed and provided some government aid to settle in their new homes, it is still a constant struggle for North Korean women defectors to manage and establish their lives, let alone navigate South Korea’s complex system. The heartbreaking story that was reported in recent news, about late Han Seong-ok (and her 6-year-old son), illustrates how many women defectors have to fight every day to overcome the “vicious cycle” of finding stability and adapting financially, socially, and culturally. This is no easy feat.

한반도는 1953년부터 남한과 북한으로 분단되어 왔습니다. 북한에서는 약 2,500만 명 중 약 1,800만 명의 사람들이 김정은 정권의 지도 하에 심각한 인권 침해, 경제 투쟁, 식량 불안, 영양실조 그리고 다른 건강 문제들을 직면하고 있습니다.
매년 1,000명 이상의 북한 주민들이 정치적, 이념적, 종교적, 경제적 또는 기타 개인적인 이유로 남한으로 망명해 오고 있습니다. 현재 한국에 있는 3만 3천 명의 탈북자들 중 85%가 여성입니다. 그들은 여성으로서뿐만 아니라 노동자, 학생, 어머니로서도 전혀 다른 사회생활에 적응해야 했습니다.
탈북자들은 남한의 정부에 환영을 받고, 새로운 생활에 정착하기 위해 약간의 지원을 받긴하지만, 많은 탈북 여성들에게는 남한의 전혀 다르고 복잡한 사회 시스템에 살아 남는 것은 말할 것도 없고, 그들의 삶을 관리하고 정착시키기 위해 매일매일이 끊임없는 힘든 날들을 살고 있습니다. 최근 뉴스에 보도된 고 한성옥 씨(6세 아들과)에 대한 가슴 아픈 이야기는 안정감을 찾고 재정적으로, 사회적으로, 문화적으로 적응하는 과정에서 '악순환'을 극복하기 위해 탈북자들이 매일 얼마나 많이 힘들게 싸워야 하는지를 실 예를 보여준다. 진정으로 이러한 삶은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다.

GPF-GPW Korea is continually taking action to help create a more welcoming and secure environment for North Korean women defectors through initiating various programs and partnering with other organizations to ensure North Korean women defectors receive the support and guidance needed to succeed.
Some of our previous and current ongoing works include:
1. Developing and coordinating women’s leadership workshops
2. Helping and connecting with North Korean women defectors through service projects (e.g. making kimchi together)
3. Initiating income generation, mentorship, job training, and technical skills development programs (e.g. flower arrangement classes, cooking classes)
4. Creating and organizing cultural, sports, education, and health programs (e.g. annual table tennis festivals)

GPF-GPW한국팀은 한국에 정착한 탈북자들의 생활을 위해 필요한 지원과 다양한 프로그램을 기획, 운영하고 있습니다. 특히, 다른 기관과 협력함을 통해 탈북 여성들에게 더 안전하고 성공할 수 있는 환경을 조성할 수 있도록 지속적으로 노력을 하고 있습니다.

4. 문화, 스포츠, 교육, 건강 프로그램 기획 및 구성(예: 연중 열리는 탁구 축제등)

Every dollar counts. We are asking members of the Korean and international Korean diaspora communities, their friends and family, and all who have a desire to support North Korean women defectors to donate anything they can. All contributions will support GPF-GPW Korea’s work (as mentioned above).
All funds will be used by GPF-GPW to help improve the livelihood of North Korean women defectors. We want to provide assistance and support to North Korean women defectors so they can transition smoothly and adjust to South Korean society and culture.
