Support for Parents Battling Dementia and Heart Issues

My family is looking for support to help my parent get through a difficult late period in life.

About 5 years ago my mom was diagnosed with Dementia and as is typical with this as she gets older she progressively loses more and more cognition and basic functions. This alone has been difficult for all of us to experience, as it is for most families.

The burden of this has been put on my dad - they have been together since their first blind date in high school. As my dad says " she's all I know and I've been with her every day since".

As most families going through this know, caring for someone through this takes it out of everyone, especially the primary caregiver, in this case my dad. They have loved and cared for each other for over 50 years, more if you count the years they dated, but my dad can no longer manage what my mom needs. They have tried but it is more than anyone can handle especially my dad.

In recent months my dad has undergone his 6th heart procedure (in his life) and has over the past few weeks been in an out of the ER 3 times because of a head injury he sustained after losing consciousness post-surgery. This has been a reoccurring event and the doctors still do not know more after several CT scans. On a side note, a few months ago support workers and doctors told my dad if he doesn't get some rest from exhaustion something far more serious may happen- we all hope this doesn't happen, but my dad is my dad and he is always there for everyone else first. I just don't want him to go while giving more than he can and not be there with my mom- he is also all she knows.

With the difficulties on an emotional and physical side of managing dementia and my dads worsening health we are asking for assistance to get through this. A I am writing this (4.5.25) my dad was again admitted to the ER and we are waiting to hear.

I am writing this and sharing our story to get my dad and my mom some help they need to better manage the time they still have together. We are seeking financial help to get my mom day-care so my dad doesn't have to do all of this himself- my mom is also at the point she will soon need 24/7 care and that is an expense that far exceeds most of our ability to incur financially. The amount listed is modest at best and we do know it wont go far, but for now it may give my dad the break he needs. With your help I may be able to get them the care they both need to live out the time they have left to do it together in the healthiest way possible.
