Hey friends of Salty!
There is something about Salty you probably don’t know.
Despite being an amazing ruck in the Pub Footy League for The Some Velvet Morning Easybeats, being at more gigs than humanly possible and the first person to offer help to anyone, Salty has been fighting her own battle.
Saltz chose to keep this very private and is the last to ask for help.
This is why we are here.
Salty has Early Onset Parkinson’s. We all knew she was special, less than 5% of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s are under 40. Even less are female.
Parkinson’s is a condition that primarily affects the Substantia Nigra. Alpha-Nucleatides destroy the Dopamine producing cells, resulting in slower or uncontrolled movement. Salty has reached the point in her journey with Parkinson’s that she needs surgical intervention.
On the 23rd of January she’ll be undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation. A device will be placed in her brain which will emit electrical impulses. This device should lessen her symptoms but, it will not cure her condition. As with most major surgeries there will be a cost involved and also a pretty significant recovery time. (looking at approx 12-16 weeks).
During that time life still goes on! Bills need paying, food needs eating, rent keeps coming and opportunities to enjoy life and friends should not be missed. Saltz is still waiting for the final out of pocket costs for the surgery as well as the necessary allied healthcare she will need to access post surgery. (Salty is currently trying to get the NDIS).
The device being put in Salty’s brain is valued in excess of $38,000. Saltz is waiting to hear if her health fund will help cover part of this. There is the expectation that out of pocket costs could be as much as $12,000 and allied health services and the general cost of living anywhere from $8000+.
We thought maybe to take a bit of the burden off, if any one could spare a few $$$ it might allow Salty to not have to worry about so much, leading up to, and then after the surgery.
Also, if you’re not in a position to chip in cash, maybe a home cooked meal when she’s home would be helpful and appreciated! Or even maybe lifts to and from hospital and appointments. (There will be an app that will be shared that people can offer help where they can).
Thank you ❤️
