Support for Spencer Cobb and family

On Halloween evening while celebrating with families and friends, Spencer was having fun with his boys and being a normal energetic fun-loving teenager. The boys were just goofing around as teenage boys do. They decided to jump into the cold lake, a lake they have all been swimming in for years. This particular time ended differently for Spencer, resulting in a traumatic spinal cord injury. Spencer fractured three vertebrae in his cervical spine (C4-C6). He lost all motor function from the torso down and has limited motion of his arms and hands. Spencer spent a week at Mercy Hospital where he had surgery, to replace two of the vertebrae, and was in the ICU for several days before being transferred to the neuro unit. A week after surgery Spencer was moved to the pediatric neuro unit at Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids, where he is expected to stay for a minimum of 12 weeks and will continue to fight every day to regain function of his body and work toward his goal of walking across the stage for high school graduation in the Spring.

To know Spencer is to adore him. He is a friend to all and has a huge network of supporters. Our family and so many others have had the privilege of witnessing Spencer's kindness, loyalty, and overall spirit for life and adventure. We have cheered him on for years and seen the incredible strength and determination this young man has both in and out of the pool.

Although this accident will forever change him, he is still the same Spencer that we all love. He has remained upbeat and determined to face and conquer the challenges to come. Spencer's family has been doing everything to stay positive, as they begin the long road ahead of them. They need our continued cheering and support now more than ever! They are hoping for prayers and miracles for the best recovery possible.
