Open heart surgery is a big deal. It's even bigger when you are 4 days old. You read that right.
We are Drew and Kelsey, but you're not here for us. Meet the Abell family: Kayley (Kelsey's sister), JD, big sister Emma, and baby Addilyn (in the other pic).
In April 2020, at the routine anatomy scan, the tech found Addi had a major heart defect. Transposition of the Great Arteries is the medical name, and it means the 2 main arteries leaving the heart develop in each other's place. It is rare, and the answer is surgery hours or days after birth, to switch them back.
Addi was born August 26 and had the surgery at 4 days old. It was a success, and now she is in recovery for a few weeks in the PICU.
The children's hospital with the specialists is about 2 hours from where they live. So that is where the appointments were, where she was born, and where they are now doing their best to stay together as a family. JD and Kayley are swapping duties between living with Emma at the hotel and staying with Addi at the hospital. Due to Covid, Emma can't even visit her new sister. We don't have a picture to show of both girls, because they haven't met yet.
It's rough, and that is before the bills. They already paid a lot out-of-pocket and there is more to come. Appointments, 2 hour drives, hotels, hospital stay, it adds up. So that is what this fundraiser is for. There is so much here we can't do anything about, but we can help lift the burden of the bills.
Anybody who knows them will tell you, they would drop what they are doing to help somebody, day or night. So now it's our turn. Please consider a donation to help free them from the financial worries and let them focus on what matters.
