Here's the scoop on Daniel. We took him to the ER in Coudersport last Sunday with vomiting that lasted more than 24 hours, severe headache and mild confusion. He was admitted to the hospital and while there he exhibited another severe headache with moderate confusion. At that time he was sent to UPMC Hamot in Erie. His condition continued to deteriorate through Monday and we were faced with the reality that we might lose him. After extensive testing it was determined that he had encephalitis caused by an unknown virus that was likely transmitted to him through an insect or tick bite. He was finally released from Hamot this past Saturday and was admitted to Elk Haven in St Marys for rehabilitation. Yesterday his neurological episodes and seizure like activity worsened and he was sent to the Penn Highlands Elk Emergency Room. He is currently back at Elk Haven and we are treating his seizure activity with medication while we await follow-up appointment with neurologists. We have been told to expect some permanent issues from his illness but he is improving. We cannot thank all of our friends and family enough who are stepping up and really being our life savers during this extremely difficult time. Wear bug spray and hold your babies close.
