As most of you know, Connor Goldberg was diagnosed last spring with a condition called Chiari Malformation and underwent brain surgery at Maine Med May 10th, 2018. During that surgery the C1 vertebrae was removed and a piece of his skull was removed and replaced with a patch. Everything went smoothly and the hope was that Connor would be back to playing soccer in August for his freshman year. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case and Connor is scheduled for a second more intensive brain surgery combined with occipital fusion Monday, May 29th.
The last year post-surgery has been extremely difficult for Connor and the Goldbergs. Recovery has not gone the way they were told that it would and Connor has had multiple rounds of steroids, constant pain and instability in his neck and has not regained the function or ability to be active as he once was. Many of his symptoms worsened rather than improving. Connor cannot attend school because of his new reality and has to receive at-home tutoring. Local doctors could not give the Goldbergs answers about what was happening and so they sought the opinion of a CM specialist in New York, Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield. Dr. Greenfield is very experienced in treating complex cases, and although Karen and Lee were hoping to hold off on another surgery, he stressed that surgery needed to be done to stabilize Connor’s neck asap. Karen and baby Finn will accompany Connor to NYC where they will stay in a hotel next to the hospital during the surgery and for a couple of weeks while Connor recovers.
Let’s raise some funds to help eliminate some of the heavy stress and financial burden the Goldbergs have and will continue to experience dealing with a very serious and chronic health condition. Their immediate costs are high and they will have to stay in New York for an extended period of time during surgery and recovery.
