William’s fight against pulmonary hypertension
Donation protected
Please help the Kopp family in these difficult times. William was born with down syndrome and a heart condition - complete balanced AV canal defect and patent ductus arteriosus. He has been fighting for his life ever since he was born. He finally went home after spending 6 weeks in NICU. Kara, Ryan and Amelia (William’s 3-year-old sister) were finally spending time together as a family. William just had to wait till he was 6 months old to get his heart surgery but because of multiple respiratory infections, he had been in and out of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Prisma Health Richland 7 times. Kara had to file for medical leave to be with him every step of the way. William was finally well enough to get his heart surgery at MUSC. Ronald McDonald's house became Kara and Ryan’s second home. It was a long recovery, but he went home and was doing great. He had a brief readmission to MUSC due to drug withdrawal after surgery. At the end of January. William started showing signs of a viral illness which landed them back at MUSC. William continued to get worse after testing positive for the human Metapnuemo virus and coronavirus (pre Covid-19). On the 1st of February, he had to get intubated. Since then, he had battled multiple rounds of pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension crisis. William is currently still intubated. He was transferred from the Cardiac ICU to the PICU for a better all hands-on approach to his illnesses. Kara stays in Ronald McDonald's house full time while Ryan and Amelia visit every weekend. In the span of 9 months, William has been through a feeding tube insertion and open heart surgery in addition to countless other procedures. He has spent a total of 5 months in the hospital and he’s only 9 months old. It has been tough for Kara, Ryan, and Amelia but they need to be strong for William.
I am asking for help for the Kopp family. They have been through a lot. The last thing they should be worried about are the day-to-day expenses, not to mention all the medical bills that have been accumulating.
