Support for the McLaughlin Family in Their Time of Need

Donation protected
While we all know "It takes a village" sometimes, this is never more true than when an unexpected traumatic event occurs in a family. On Saturday, August 17th, many members of the McLaughlin Family (Brian, Alex, Sean, Sarah, their cousin Joe Gershman and Joe's girlfriend, Natalie Jackson) were involved in a serious boating accident while enjoying the end of summer together in Vermont.

Brian suffered life-threatening injuries and has been transferred from the ICU at Dartmouth Hitchcock to Mass General Brigham (MGB). Meg has been by his bedside since the accident occurred. Each of the others passengers sustained physical injuries requiring medical intervention, as well as, the emotional wounds related to having been involved in the accident. In addition to requiring ongoing medical care for themselves, Brian's family members are coping with the uncertainty of his prognosis and their own processing of having been part of a such a traumatic event.

Much remains unknown about what Brian's needs will be in the future, as he remains in critical condition at this time. While supporting him at his bedside, Meg and Meg's four siblings are also busy arranging follow up care for their children. They are focused on the physical and mental health needs of everyone who was on the boat. Supporting all six members who were part of this event in the ways they each need is the goal. This will take time, effort and financial resources. That is where "the village" comes in...

Follow-up care for six people will require a significant amount of financial resources (not to mention coordination of care for all involved). Some of the anticipated costs are: lodging close to the hospital and expected long-term rehab facility, transportation to appointments, meals for Meg and the children, non-covered therapeutic services for treatment of acute trauma, and lack of income due to injury. More will be known about Brian's needs as his prognosis becomes clearer. The current monetary goal reflects immediate needs for Meg to be by Brian's side and for their children, nephew and nephew's girlfriend to receive the care they need, both physically and emotionally. Please consider contributing what you can and share as appropriate. Thank you.
