Support for UA Instructors

On Monday, July 20th Jenny Duckworth, Amy Smith, Mary Louise Hendley, and Daniel McCurry, four instructors at the University of Alabama's English Language Institute, received notice that their contracts would not be renewed for the 2020-2021 academic year. The University of Alabama had assured faculty and staff that there would be no layoffs as the University meets budget shortfalls caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but refusing to renew contracts on such short notice is tantamount to a layoff.

Jenny, Amy, Mary, and Daniel have worked at UA for between five and seven years. Tuscaloosa is their home. Finding out in late July that their contracts will not be renewed leaves these faculty no time to find work in academia and creates incredible hardship for them and their families. 

United Campus Workers of Alabama are raising money to help our soon to be former colleagues Jenny, Amy, Mary, and Daniel make rent and mortgage payments and to help cover relocation costs resulting from this sudden loss of income. All funds raised will be evenly distributed to Jenny, Amy, Mary and Daniel.
