Support for Kelly Stokes’ surgery and recovery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Paula and I am fundraising to help our dear friends Kelly and Chris, get through this unexpected diagnosis of Stage Three Bladder Cancer for Kelly.

Kelly is requiring major surgery to remove all the cancer from her pelvic region as it is a muscle invasive cancer and has spread. There are many unexpected costs associated including their accommodation, travel to and from Edmonton, loss of work for both Kelly and Chris, unknown recovery time and follow up appointments or treatments, depending on the prognosis.

As some of the most community minded, caring, fun and positive people out there, please consider helping them by relieving some of the financial stressors, so the focus can be on the courage and strength needed to get through these next big steps.

In April, Kelly required Bladder Augmentation surgery due to a congenital neurogenic bladder disability. The complex surgery was a success using a portion of her bowel, thereafter requiring self intermittent catheterization to void her bladder.

Returning home, Kelly’s recovery was slow and complicated both for her bladder and bowel but the outcome was positive.

However, in September Kelly started to experience significant bladder and back pain and intermittent blood in her urine when catheterizing.
Kelly had scans in her hometown, but ultimately this had them back in Edmonton with the need to see her surgeon and urologist for tests, feeling somehow though that her symptoms must just be related to her Augmentation surgery.

It was there, that cancer tumours were found in both her bladder and urethra.
They returned home, shocked by the news. They focussed on remaining positive as they wouldn’t have any more information until the removal of the tumours.
Kelly recently underwent surgery once again in Edmonton to remove the tumours, but unfortunately, the cancer was found to be a muscle-invasive cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder.

Kelly will soon be returning to Edmonton for Radical Cystectomy surgery which will be a complete surgical removal of her bladder, urethra, uterus and partial vaginal removal. They will use her bowel once again, this time for the need for a stoma and she will have a urostomy bag for life.

This a very serious surgery, she will be admitted with a 14 day or more stay in the hospital.
We will be praying for the best possible outcome!

Please use this platform to donate and share your words of support and encouragement for our dear friends.

We will be providing updates as soon as we know more as Kelly and her family journey through this most difficult time.
