Here is a brief story of how our sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew's lives have been forever changed...
On Sunday, June 14, 2020, the Godinez family, Yaned, Sadie and Jose had a shopping day and dinner plans already set. This all changed when a family member called Yaned and asked if she and her boyfriend, Raul, could come over because they were in town and they hadn't seen their "new" home. After going back and forth, they decided to cancel their day and allow these individuals to come over. Yaned scurried to clean the house as she prepared for their guests to arrive. The weather had been beautiful in Watsonville, CA so Jose decided that a little carne asada in the backyard wouldn't hurt.
They ate, shared stories and caught up on life just as anyone would when family is visiting. Conversation was going well until Raul started to vocalize some inappropriate things in their home. Jose and Yaned had told Raul to watch his mouth since Sadie, 14 years old, was home and the comments he was making were not welcomed. The conversation quickly escalated into a verbal argument. Jose and Yaned had asked Raul to leave and he wouldn't. Raul then got physical with Jose and Yaned. Raul eventually left. Little did they know that this would be the moment their lives would be forever impacted by such a violent crime! As Yaned shut the door and Sadie began to remove her shoes, they had no idea that Raul was standing on their sidewalk and was getting ready to pull the trigger to his gun. FIVE shots fired at their door. One bullet hit Yaned in the abdomen and another hit Sadie in the shoulder, which traveled to her neck. Raul fled the scene and 9-1-1 was called.
In critical condition, Yaned was rushed to one hospital and Sadie was to another. Yes, they were sent to different hospitals! One that allows visitors and one that doesn't. Yaned has had multiple surgeries and was in ICU for SEVEN days. She currently is still in the hospital where she is being closely monitored. Although she has shown GREAT improvement she recently has been showing some complications. Sadie, our sweet Sadie, has been in ICU the ENTIRE time. She has had one very long surgery and is waiting for another. She has had some major setbacks but remains to be quite the fighter.
Jose has been with Sadie every single day. Yaned is not allowed any visitors. Ivan, their son and Sadie's older brother, who is stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, is currently here on emergency leave from the Navy. With approval from the hospital, Ivan has been able to spend sometime with little sister but not his mom. Phone and Zoom calls is NOT the way you want to communicate with a loved one during this time! There are no words to describe how our family and friends are feeling right now.
There has been no update as to when Yaned or Sadie will be released from the hospital. Jose will continue to be by Sadie's side until she is released from the hospital. This means Jose will not be working. Yaned will not be working. Although they have medical insurance, we all know that the medical bills as well as other bills including their mortgage are going to start piling up. This is when YOU all come in. We are asking you to PLEASE help the Godinez family! Any donation will help alleviate any of the financial burden this unfortunate circumstance has left them in.
