Life is seldom easy and never fair
On Sunday, May 12th, 2024, my father, Fred Goldberg, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. An MRI indicated it had spread to his brain, where they found over fifty metastases.
The Diagnosis
This all began with a simple sinus infection that developed into a case of walking pneumonia. Finding that his symptoms weren’t improving with antibiotics, he returned to urgent care, where doctors ordered additional X-rays and a CT scan. They found a small mass in his left lung, prompting his admission to the hospital for further evaluation and additional tests. These tests confirmed the news that nobody wants to hear—Stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to the brain.
Nobody walking into urgent care for a relatively minor health issue anticipates receiving life changing news, but this diagnosis is even more unexpected given that my dad is an extremely active non-smoker with a healthy lifestyle. We are currently waiting on biopsy results to determine the course of treatment.
The Goal
He starts treatments very soon, but the bills are here now. As I’m sure you know, cancer diagnoses and treatments are extremely expensive. Due to the physical nature of his profession as a contractor, it is unclear when and in what capacity he can return to work. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to help defer medical expenses and keep my dad in his home. Donations of any size will help relieve the massive financial burden and let him focus on recovering and spending time with his family and friends.
More About Fred
My father prides himself on eating healthy and being physically fit (especially for 58!). He works out regularly and rides both mountain bikes and dirt bikes with a tight knit crew that includes riders half his age (who he regularly rides circles around).
He is an original member of a unique group of friends called “Gorilla Moto” (Plank Owner, for you Navy types) and has enjoyed more adventures and laughs in these few years than many do in their lifetimes. They have traveled from Cabo to Canada (and all points in-between) enjoying both life on motorcycles as well as the company of any like-minded people that they meet. As a passionate mountain biker and moto racer, he is used to fighting for the win, but this is the toughest fight of his life.
He is also the owner and proprietor of Elite Handyman Service. He provides a sought-after quality that only a true craftsman can deliver. He has built his company and reputation on being a trustworthy and reliable handyman producing the highest quality work. Anyone my dad has done work for would be quick to endorse his work and refer him to anyone for any type of job they need.
Finally, Fred is a much-loved father, a loyal friend to many, and an integral member of his community. It is those people we look to now, to help my dad fight this horrible thing called cancer. We are hoping to enjoy his company for many years to come, and your donation makes that possible. Let’s do this!
