*** Update - Friday, May 17th ***
From Marggret - Galel's brain surgery went great! He is finally at home resting. I want to thank everyone who helped me during this very difficult time. His face paralysis is almost fully restored and his hand dexterity seems to be back with full function. I will tell you more later as once they had him open it turned out to be something quite fascinating, but that is for later when I have more time. Currently, he is on 5 medications one of which costs $13,000 for 2 weeks. The hospital was able to get us 4 days for free and they are working on the other days to help us. OHSU was amazing with everything they did. I'm so happy he is back home.

*** Update - Wednesday, May 15th ***
Galel came out of surgery this morning and is in recovery. All is looks great so far. His siblings arrived earlier this week to help take care of him, the house, cooking and the kiddo.

Hello! My name is Amy and I am fundraising for my long-time friend - Marggret Leach Avalos and her family.

Most of you probably have no idea, but Marggret's husband (Galel) has been experiencing some medical issues for a while and was more recently diagnosed with a brain cyst. The symptoms have evolved to limited mobility on the left side of his body, frequent headaches, and he has not been able to work consistently. He is currently not able to work at all.

It was a huge relief when the lemon-sized mass found in his head turned out to be a cyst and is not cancerous. His diagnosis is a best-case scenario for what it is. The surgery itself will be less risky and considerably less invasive than most brain surgeries. Recovery time is likely to take weeks as opposed to months or years.

Galel is a wonderful man that came to America from Guatemala. He met Marggret in Los Angeles and fell in love, getting married shortly after. They now have a 10-year-old son who is excelling in school and almost taller than Marggret.

The family has medical insurance but unfortunately, the insurance provider has rejected the surgery and will not cover it. The hospital has been trying to cancel the surgery unless a large deposit is made. These kinds of surgeries have to be scheduled some months in advance at this point and they are working with one of the top hospitals in Oregon.

Postponing his surgery is not an option. The surgery itself is low-risk and VERY likely to fully resolve the issues he has been having and ensure his future health.

It looks like the surgery will need to be paid for out of pocket and is predicted to cost upwards of $150,000. With Galel out of work and auxiliary medical expenses, the family is doing everything they can.

At this point, we ask for your help and appreciate anything you can do.

His surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th. We will keep you updated.
